Celebrating the life of John White Campbell, M.D.

WHEREAS, John White Campbell, M.D., a respected physician and a dedicated member of the Brookneal community, died on August 27, 2012; and

WHEREAS, born in Forest, John White Campbell played football at E.C. Glass High School and earned a football scholarship to the University of Virginia; in 1961 he graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School as the president of his class; and

WHEREAS, in 1974 Dr. Campbell opened the Brookneal Medical Center and went on to faithfully serve the community as a family physician for 34 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell was known and loved throughout the Town of Brookneal; he considered his patients the most important people in the world and went to any lengths to ensure that they received the best care; and

WHEREAS, showing his keen intellect through his knowledge of medicine and his ability to recall patients’ medical histories, Dr. Campbell put patients at ease by making each feel like a personal friend; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell was a generous volunteer in the community, providing free medical care to the children at Patrick Henry Boys’ Home for nearly 15 years; and

WHEREAS, helping to safeguard the community as the physician for the Brookneal Volunteer Rescue Squad, Dr. Campbell tended to patients whenever and wherever he was called; and

WHEREAS, serving as the team physician for the William Campbell High School football team for 24 years, Dr. Campbell was essential to the team’s 2005 state championship run, ensuring that players received the care they needed to continue performing at high levels; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell offered his medical expertise to the wider Lynchburg area, working in the emergency room at Lynchburg General Hospital, now known as Centra Health; and

WHEREAS, a loyal member of Brookneal United Methodist Church, Dr. Campbell served in many leadership roles and enjoyed faith and fellowship with the community; and

WHEREAS, an avid fan of the University of Virginia Wahoos, Dr. Campbell also enjoyed horses, golf, and keeping up with current events; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell received many awards throughout his life, including the Citizen of the Year award from the Brookneal Lions Club and the Brookneal Community Builders award from Staunton River Lodge No. 155 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by three sons, John, Jr., Jeremy, and Jeffrey, Dr. Campbell is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Brookneal’s Mayor Phyllis Campbell; children, James, Joseph, and Vaneta, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of John White Campbell, M.D., a devoted care provider and esteemed resident of the Town of Brookneal; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John White Campbell, M.D., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
