WHEREAS, Haney Mottley, who retired from the Amherst Town Council on December 31, 2012, is commended for his decades of service to the citizens of the Town of Amherst; and

WHEREAS, for more than half of a century, Haney Mottley has served his fellow residents in a variety of capacities; and

WHEREAS, from 1951 to 1992, Haney Mottley worked to ensure the safety of the citizens of the Town of Amherst in his role as police chief; and

WHEREAS, Haney Mottley provided strong leadership to enforce the law, coordinate public safety efforts, and enhance the department’s relationship with the community; and

WHEREAS, Haney Mottley would also occasionally transport injured or ill residents in his car; he realized the need for an ambulance service for the area and gathered together other members of the community to form the Amherst Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, from July 1, 1994, to June 30, 2004, and from July 1, 2006, to December 31, 2012, Haney Mottley served on the Amherst Town Council; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader, Haney Mottley worked with other town council members, regional officials, and area citizens to ensure the efficient and effective operation of local government; and

WHEREAS, Haney Mottley has also reached out to community members through his involvement at Emmanuel United Methodist Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Haney Mottley on the occasion of his retirement for his distinguished public service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Haney Mottley as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for his longtime service to the residents of the Town of Amherst.
