2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, Roger Lee Cook, a devoted educator, outstanding softball coach, and lifetime resident of Pittsylvania County and the City of Danville, died on January 20, 2013; and
WHEREAS, born in the City of Danville in 1946, Roger Cook went on to graduate from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree; and
WHEREAS, Roger Cook joined Pittsylvania County Schools and enjoyed a 37-year career as a teacher at Tunstall High School in Dry Fork; and
WHEREAS, Roger Cook built the Tunstall High School girls’ softball program from the ground up and worked tirelessly to ensure that the team achieved success; and
WHEREAS, over his 26-year career as head coach of the girls’ softball team, Roger Cook earned the respect of the students, parents, and staff of Tunstall High School with his exceptional leadership; and
WHEREAS, with 19 district championships, six regional championships, and three state runner-up titles, Roger Cook was recognized as district, regional, and state coach of the year; and
WHEREAS, when he retired in 2009, Roger Cook had amassed 488 wins throughout his career, the most wins by any Tunstall High School coach and the second most by a softball coach in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Roger Cook enjoyed faith and fellowship with the community at Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church and Shermont Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, known as an honest, loyal, and hardworking man, Roger Cook touched many lives as a coach, teacher, and friend; and
WHEREAS, Roger Cook is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Wendy; children, Brian, Stephen, Bryant, and Shannon, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Roger Lee Cook, a loyal educator, acclaimed softball coach, and active member of the Pittsylvania County and Danville communities; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Roger Lee Cook as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
