HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 757 Offered January 18, 2013 Commending the Northampton County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. ---------- Patron-- Lewis ----------

WHEREAS, the Northampton County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate 100 years of service promoting the history and the memory of Revolutionary patriots in 2013; and

WHEREAS, on December 12, 1913, Edmonia F. Tomlin Maupin, State Regent of the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), boarded a steamer and braved the choppy winter waters of the Chesapeake Bay to install Mary Macon Fitzhugh (Mrs. William Bullitt Fitzhugh) as the first regent of the Northampton County Chapter; and

WHEREAS, at the 18th Virginia state DAR member conference, the state regent offered a warm welcome to the Northampton County Chapter and congratulated it for fine early work, which included contributions to the American Red Cross and a celebration of George Washington’s birthday with patriotic songs and readings; and

WHEREAS, in celebration of the nation’s bicentennial, the Northampton County Chapter carried out a project to preserve a valuable historical resource by verifying earlier catalogs of tombstone inscriptions throughout the county; and

WHEREAS, the Northampton County Chapter, today led by Regent Dana Latimer Van Dyke, still works to defend and preserve sites, relics, and documents of historical significance to the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, the chapter also encourages historical research into the Revolution; promotes the spread of general knowledge to cultivate an informed electorate, as George Washington directed in his farewell address; and celebrates the institutions of American liberty; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Northampton County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Northampton County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the chapter’s patriotism and invaluable contributions to Virginia and United States history and society.
