Commending the Gloucester Rotary Club.

WHEREAS, in May 2012, the Gloucester Rotary Club celebrated 50 years of putting “service above self”; and

WHEREAS, the original Gloucester Rotary Club, formed in 1933, surrendered its charter when World War II fuel rationing made it impossible for members to attend required meetings; and

WHEREAS, the Gloucester Rotary Club convened again in 1962, this time sponsored by the Richmond Rotary Club, with 21 charter members; and

WHEREAS, since 1962, membership in the Gloucester Rotary Club has nearly doubled; and

WHEREAS, the Gloucester Rotary Club has loyally assisted other fledgling clubs, sponsoring the Gloucester Point and Mathews Rotary Clubs; and

WHEREAS, much of the Gloucester Rotarians’ early work dealt with pressing medical issues such as polio vaccinations and the establishment of a local hospital; and

WHEREAS, the Gloucester Rotarians continue to establish a strong record of community service, now donating almost $20,000 annually to local schools, charities, and organizations; and

WHEREAS, also leaving its mark internationally, the Gloucester Rotary Club has contributed nearly $120,000 to the Rotary International Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the Gloucester Rotary Club commemorated its 50th anniversary with a party at the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust office; and

WHEREAS, a vital part of the community, the Gloucester Rotary Club has shown initiative, vision, and vigor in the building of a bright future for Gloucester; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Gloucester Rotary Club on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Gloucester Rotary Club as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the club’s hard work and kindness and best wishes for many more years of exemplary service.
