HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 750
Commending the Lloyd C. Bird High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird High School football team claimed its first state title by defeating Ocean Lakes High School 14 - 10 to win the 2012 Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division VI state football championship; and

WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks are the top ranked football program by winning percentage in the Commonwealth with a percentage of .786, which also ranks in the top 30 of high schools in the nation that have played at least 300 games; and

WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks finished the season with a record of 14 - 0 to become the first undefeated team in school history; and

WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks football team boasted an extremely strong running game, led by Paul Robertson, who rushed for a Virginia High School League record of 426 yards in the state semifinal game, when the Skyhawks defeated Oakton High School 41 - 17; and

WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks’ defense was so strong that it held its opponents to an average of 8.6 points per game; and

WHEREAS, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks have won 23 district championships (12 consecutive), seven regional championships, and one state championship in 35 years of football; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated coaching staff, led by head coach David Bedwell, and an enthusiastic and supportive community contributed to the team’s success; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Lloyd C. Bird football team on winning the 2012 Virginia High School League Group AAA, Division VI state football championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David Bedwell, head coach of the Lloyd C. Bird football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on an outstanding season.
