2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the George Wythe High School football team of Wytheville won the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 1 state football championship in December 2012; and
WHEREAS, after an 11-game winning streak, the George Wythe Maroons finished the season with a 14 - 1 record, earning their sixth consecutive title in the Hogoheegee District and the school’s second state title; and
WHEREAS, in the state championship game, the George Wythe Maroons took the lead early in the fourth quarter to defeat Honaker High School 17 - 10; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe Maroons focused on a strong running game throughout the season and racked up 261 yards on the ground against the Honaker Tigers; and
WHEREAS, offensive leaders for the George Wythe Maroons were senior Dominique Crockett with 98 yards and a touchdown, senior Justin Snavely with 73 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore Trey Skeens with 88 yards; and
WHEREAS, the George Wythe Maroons’ defense played a crucial role in the victory, holding the Honaker Tigers to only four plays with gains of more than 10 yards and only three first down conversions in the second half; and
WHEREAS, each member of the George Wythe High School football team, including the team’s 19 seniors, displayed integrity, persistence, and skill throughout the regular season and the playoffs; and
WHEREAS, H.S. Ingo, head coach of the George Wythe High School football team, the assistant coaches, and the school’s administration showed exceptional leadership in guiding the team to victory; and
WHEREAS, the win is a tribute to the support shown by the students, alumni, friends, and fans of George Wythe High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the George Wythe High School football team for winning the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 1 state football championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to H.S. Ingo, head coach of the George Wythe High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s hard work and determination.
