13102968DWHEREAS, the Virginia Mentoring Partnership, an organization dedicated to providing training and technical assistance to mentors and mentoring programs, will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1993, the Virginia Mentoring Partnership (VMP) ensures a high quality of mentoring programs by supplying training and support to other organizations; and
WHEREAS, the VMP encourages organizations to reach out to a variety of youth, including those in single-parent households, born to teen parents, living in poverty, in first-generation immigrant families, or who will not finish high school on time; and
WHEREAS, studies show that quality mentoring programs, similar to those encouraged by the VMP, can increase children’s self-esteem, school attendance, and graduation rates and reduce juvenile crime; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, the VMP has prepared over 30,000 volunteers and 800 organizations to better serve their communities; and
WHEREAS, through the AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America Program, the VMP seeks to build an accessible infrastructure for mentors and mentor groups; and
WHEREAS, using nationally recognized standards and best practices, the VMP evaluates the program practices of mentors and mentoring organizations; and
WHEREAS, in January, National Mentoring Month in Virginia, the VMP will increase efforts to recruit new volunteer mentors; and
WHEREAS, on March 14, 2013, the VMP will commemorate its 20th anniversary at the Science Museum of Virginia with its annual award ceremony and mentoring summit; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Mentoring Partnership on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Mentoring Partnership as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s extensive and effective support for youth mentoring efforts.
