HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 738
Commending Fred S. Crittenden.

WHEREAS, Fred S. Crittenden, a dedicated public servant and an industry leader in agriculture, was inducted into the Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame in 2012; and

WHEREAS, as a founding member of the Virginia Pork Industry Foundation, now known as the Virginia Pork Industry Association, Fred Crittenden has been an influential member of the pork business for much of his life; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crittenden became the first individual in Virginia to export live hogs for breeding stock, supplying quality livestock to customers in 32 countries; and

WHEREAS, from showing hogs in competitions to hosting swine seminars in the Dominican Republic, Fred Crittenden displayed the knowledge and professionalism that would earn him industry recognition all over the East Coast of the United States; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crittenden also helped to organize the Virginia Purebred Livestock International, served as a member of the National Board of Hog Breeders for many years, and encouraged the formation of the Virginia Pork Industry Board; and

WHEREAS, in 1971 Fred Crittenden followed in the footsteps of his father, a former county treasurer, and sought to serve the community through public office; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crittenden served on the Middlesex County School Board from 1971 to 1979, and on the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors from 1980 to 2011, showing dedication and initiative in both positions; and

WHEREAS, aware of the value of education, Fred Crittenden spearheaded efforts to build Saint Clare Walker Middle School and Middlesex Elementary School and to remodel Middlesex High School; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crittenden also sought to enhance Middlesex County by supporting the construction of two branches of the Middlesex County Public Library; and

WHEREAS, utilizing the wisdom he had gained as a successful businessman, Fred Crittenden worked to ensure the responsible use of taxpayer dollars in Middlesex County; and

WHEREAS, a passionate baseball fan, Fred Crittenden and his family have supported the Deltaville Deltas, a local semi-professional team, since the 1940s; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crittenden has been a driving force in Middlesex County, growing industry, supporting education, and working tirelessly to better his community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Fred S. Crittenden on his induction into the Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame in 2012; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fred S. Crittenden as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his diligent service and numerous contributions to his community, the pork industry, and the Commonwealth.
