HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 736
Commending the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution.

WHEREAS, the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution, an organization composed of descendants of Revolutionary War soldiers, has announced the relocation of its national headquarters to the site where many of its members’ ancestors once worked and met, the City of Williamsburg; and

WHEREAS, the Sons of the Revolution, formed a century after the Revolutionary War to broaden participation in the preservation of the memory of those individuals who worked to create the nation, today, has chapters located across the United States; and

WHEREAS, on June 7, 1895, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the Revolution was formed by 20 men to “perpetuate the memory of the men who . . . achieved the Independence of the country,” preserve documents related to the Revolutionary War period, and keep alive the patriotic spirit of their forebears; and

WHEREAS, on February 22, 1896, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the Revolution held its first Washington’s Birthday Dinner to commemorate the birthday of the nation’s first president; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the Revolution also participates in activities to commemorate the surrender at Yorktown, holds gatherings at the historical homes of distinguished Virginians, and has worked with interested parties to place markers at Revolutionary War sites; and

WHEREAS, during the nation’s bicentennial, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the Revolution assisted with the cost of a filmed re-enactment of Patrick Henry’s stirring speech at St. John’s Church and the production of a commemorative book; and

WHEREAS, the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution, with the relocation of its national headquarters to Williamsburg, will now be able to draw inspiration from close proximity to the sites that played such an integral part of the nation’s founding; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution on the occasion of its relocation to the historic City of Williamsburg; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Terry Davenport, president of the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution, as an expression of the General Assembly’s welcome to the organization and admiration for the organization’s commitment to preserving the memory of the Commonwealth’s and nation’s Founding Fathers.
