Commending the Goochland High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Goochland High School football team won the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 2 state football championship in December 2012; and

WHEREAS, the Goochland High School Bulldogs finished the season with a 13 - 2 record and a win over then undefeated Essex High School in the championship, earning their second state title since 2006; and

WHEREAS, the Goochland Bulldogs ignored distractions and kept their minds on a victory, even when their bus broke down on the way to the game; and

WHEREAS, the game began with a defensive struggle on both sides until the Goochland Bulldogs’ running game found traction, culminating in a 10-play touchdown drive of all runs; and

WHEREAS, taking pride in their physical style of play, the Goochland Bulldogs gained 381 rushing yards in the 41 - 14 victory over the Essex Trojans; and

WHEREAS, scoring leaders for the Goochland Bulldogs included quarterback Jordan Jefferson with 110 yards and a touchdown, Mitchell Brice with 102 yards and two touchdowns, David Dyer with 60 yards and two touchdowns, and Connor Saunders with 36 yards and two touchdowns; and

WHEREAS, with interceptions by Mason Engel and Jordan Jefferson, the Goochland Bulldogs’ defense was crucial in the win, holding the previously unstoppable Essex Trojans to their lowest offensive numbers of the season; and

WHEREAS, the Goochland Bulldogs’ special teams also played a strategic role, throwing their opponent off-balance by recovering two of three onside kicks and keeping the Essex Trojans pinned deep in their own territory; and

WHEREAS, the victory is a tribute to the skill, dedication, and focus of the players; the hard work of the coaching staff; and the support of the students, faculty, and fans of Goochland High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Goochland High School football team for winning the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A, Division 2 state football championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joe Fowler, head coach of the Goochland High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s talent, grit, and determination.
