Celebrating the life of Ranjit Kumar Sen.

WHEREAS, Ranjit Kumar Sen, a respected businessman who made many contributions to the Richmond area through his community endeavors, died on September 5, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Kolkata, India, Ranjit Sen grew up the youngest of 11 children; he received a bachelor’s degree from Hamburg University and immigrated to Richmond in 1964 and immersed himself in business and civic affairs in his new hometown; and

WHEREAS, Ranjit Sen lived the American dream, fulfilling his entrepreneurial ambitions with the founding of Diversified Engineering, an industrial automation systems company, and Code X Inc., an information technology consulting company; and

WHEREAS, an innovative and visionary businessman, Ranjit Sen encouraged his employees to excel and earned the 2011 RichTech Chairman’s Award for his contributions to the growth of technology in the region; and

WHEREAS, known for his friendly manner and genuine interest in others, Ranjit Sen served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the local chapter of the American Red Cross, CenterStage Foundation, Maymont, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business Foundation, and Greater Richmond Technology Council; and

WHEREAS, a respected business leader, Ranjit Sen worked to ensure the economic vitality and prosperity of Virginia through his work on the Virginia International Trade Alliance and Virginia Port Authority; and

WHEREAS, Ranjit Sen collaborated with other leaders in the community to share the rich cultural traditions and heritage of his native land with Central Virginians through a variety of endeavors over the years; and

WHEREAS, a member of the board of trustees at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Ranjit Sen worked to bring exhibits on Indian art to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; he also served as a founding member of the Hindu Center of Virginia and introduced thousands to authentic Indian food, dance, and culture as a founder and chair of the popular Festival of India; and

WHEREAS, Ranjit Sen earned a Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and a philanthropy award from the Asian American Society of Central Virginia for his thoughtful generosity; and

WHEREAS, known for his kind and gentle spirit, Ranjit Sen touched and enriched the lives of countless individuals and will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Inge Braun Sen; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a remarkable Virginian, Ranjit Kumar Sen; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ranjit Kumar Sen as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
