Commending the Honorable Karen A. Henenberg.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Karen A. Henenberg, a judge of the General District Court for the 17th Judicial District, will retire in 2013 after a distinguished 18-year career on the bench; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, now known as Randolph College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Karen Henenberg earned a law degree from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law; and

WHEREAS, Karen Henenberg spent four years as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Arlington County before entering private practice, first at a firm and later establishing her own practice in criminal, domestic relations, and civil law while also serving as a part-time assistant city attorney for the City of Fairfax; and

WHEREAS, a gifted educator, Karen Henenberg shared her extensive experience and knowledge with law-enforcement recruits as the part-time chief legal instructor at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy; and

WHEREAS, in 1991, Karen Henenberg was appointed as a substitute judge in the Arlington Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court; four years later, she was elected as General District Court judge for the 17th Judicial District; and

WHEREAS, an extremely knowledgeable jurist, Judge Henenberg is known for her skill and dedication to educating her fellow judges, law students, lawyers, and citizens through seminars and programs she has developed and presented; and

WHEREAS, Judge Henenberg has given presentations to the Judicial Conference of Virginia for District Court Judges, Virginia Continuing Legal Education, Arlington County Bar Association, Virginia Women Attorneys Association, and National Trial Advocacy College; and

WHEREAS, Judge Henenberg has also served as an adjunct professor of law at Marymount University and George Mason University School of Law; and

WHEREAS, in 2009, Judge Henenberg received the Virginia Lawyers Weekly Leaders in the Law Award for her contributions to legal education and service as a mentor to young women seeking judicial careers; and

WHEREAS, Judge Henenberg has served the Commonwealth and the judicial system with great dedication and, in retirement, will serve as a substitute judge while continuing to teach at the university level and engage in community service activities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Honorable Karen A. Henenberg for her exemplary service to the 17th Judicial District and the Commonwealth on the occasion of her retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Karen A. Henenberg as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for her commitment to justice and public service.
