2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Reverend Robert Thompson, the beloved senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Ashland, retired in 2012 after 20 years of faithful service to the congregation and community; and
WHEREAS, selected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Reverend Thompson received his master of divinity degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he served as student government president; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Thompson served the congregations of First Baptist Church of Annandale, Corrottoman Baptist Church in Lancaster, and Woodland Heights Baptist Church in Richmond before joining First Baptist Church in Ashland in 1992; and
WHEREAS, for 20 years, Reverend Thompson provided inspired words and thoughtful guidance to help create a loving and supportive spiritual community at First Baptist Church for members and visitors; and
WHEREAS, throughout his tenure, Reverend Thompson encouraged a wide variety of First Baptist Church outreach efforts to the community; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Thompson has generously given of his time and talents as a member of the board of trustees at Hargrave Military Academy and Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Thompson has been called upon and offered invocations to Ashland Town Council meetings and, upon the request of Delegates John A. Cox and Frank D. Hargrove, Sr., to the Virginia House of Delegates Sessions on two days; and
WHEREAS, a man of deep faith and abiding love for others, Reverend Thompson has touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his exceptional career in the ministry; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Reverend Robert Thompson on the occasion of his retirement as pastor of First Baptist Church in Ashland; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Robert Thompson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his dedication to serving others and best wishes in his future endeavors.
