Commending the Eastside High School softball team.

WHEREAS, the Eastside High School softball team capped a winning season by capturing the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A, Division 2 state championship; and

WHEREAS, the Eastside High School softball team was led by several seniors who had dreamed of winning a state softball championship since winning their Little League state championship; and

WHEREAS, the team from Eastside High School, a newly consolidated school that brought together Coeburn and St. Paul High Schools, captured the Cumberland District title and eventually advanced to the state semifinal game, where it faced King William High School at the Moyer Complex in Salem; and

WHEREAS, both teams remained scoreless during the first four innings with the Eastside Lady Spartans scoring a run in the fifth inning before exploding in the sixth inning to send four runners across home plate and seal the semifinal victory; and

WHEREAS, the next day, the Eastside Lady Spartans faced John S. Battle High School with pitcher Lindsay Dean on the mound and a tight defense that kept the John Battle Trojans at bay; and

WHEREAS, enthusiastic spectators watched as the game moved into the sixth inning and Alana Johnson drove in Samantha Cole for the Lady Spartans winning run and first state championship victory; and

WHEREAS, senior Lindsay Lawson was named the Cumberland District’s softball player of the year, while head coach Suzi Atwood garnered Cumberland District coach of the year honors; and

WHEREAS, Lindsay Lawson, Lindsay Dean, Alana Johnson, Courtney Marrs, Erin Stanley, and Samantha Cole were all named to the All-Cumberland District first team; and

WHEREAS, the championship victory was a result of the talent and dedication of all the players, the leadership of head coach Suzi Atwood, and the support of the Eastside High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Eastside High School softball team on winning the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A, Division 2 state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Eastside High School softball team as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on the team’s outstanding season and championship performance.
