2013 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Mid-Atlantic Cricket Conference and the Central Virginia Cricket Association have achieved great success in organizing and raising awareness for the sport of cricket in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, founded from social leagues which played since 1994, the Mid-Atlantic Cricket Conference (MACC) and Central Virginia Cricket Association (CVCA) facilitate formal competition in the region; and
WHEREAS, the MACC and CVCA are now comprised of many talented amateur players and several teams spanning cities throughout Virginia; and
WHEREAS, teams are organized in Henrico, Chesterfield, Charlottesville, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Roanoke, and Blacksburg; and
WHEREAS, the MACC and CVCA adhere to the international cricket code of rules, ensuring the highest possible standards of play and officiating; and
WHEREAS, uniting individuals from a variety of different backgrounds, the MACC and CVCA draw players of Australian, English, South African, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Caribbean, and West Indian descent; and
WHEREAS, historical records indicate that early Virginians William Byrd of Westover and Thomas Jefferson, grandfather of President Thomas Jefferson, played cricket; and
WHEREAS, both the MACC and CVCA work within their communities to develop cricket teams, establish cricket venues, and encourage new players and fans; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the cricket leagues of Virginia for their years of promoting and encouraging cricket in the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Zulfiqar M. Khan to offer to MACC President Dipendra C. Sengupta and CVCA President Rajiv Khana for distribution to regional teams, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the cricket leagues of Virginia’s work to encourage growth in local cricket and best wishes for the future.
