HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 686
Commending Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts, Incorporated.

WHEREAS, throughout 2013, Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts, Incorporated, the private, nonprofit organization that first staged The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama in 1964 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, will be celebrating the 50th season of that drama; and

WHEREAS, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama is the longest continually running outdoor drama in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, as previously enacted by the General Assembly, with concurrence by the Governor, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama is designated as the Commonwealth’s official outdoor drama by § 1-510 of the Code of Virginia, as amended; and

WHEREAS, for the past 50 years, it has been the objective of Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts, Incorporated, to provide an exciting, entertaining, and accurate accounting of the story made famous in the early 1900s by the noted author, John Fox, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, the drama depicts the effect that the discovery of coal in the Appalachian Mountains had on the people of the beautiful mountain region of Southwestern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the drama has been staged over this 50-year span by a dedicated group of volunteer production crew and cast members; and

WHEREAS, the drama has not only brought a vibrant venue of cultural enrichment to the region, but has also been an important economic contributor and an early regional pioneer in heritage and asset-based development; and

WHEREAS, Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts, Incorporated, has marked 2013 for a number of festive events to help celebrate this significant milestone of the longest running outdoor drama in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts, Incorporated, on the occasion of its golden season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the officers and board of directors of Lonesome Pine Arts and Crafts, Incorporated, as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for the continued success of The Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama.
