HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 637
Commending the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond.

WHEREAS, the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond celebrated 50 years of exceptional service to the Richmond community in 2012; and

WHEREAS, President Frederic W. Boatwright desired to provide higher education opportunities to working adults in Richmond through the offering of night classes; and

WHEREAS, President George M. Modlin, himself a former director of the Evening School of Business Administration, established a separate school to serve working adults; the University College opened its doors for classes on September 17, 1962; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Deans Martin L. Shotzberger, James A. Moncure, Max C. Graeber, and James L. Narduzzi, the School of Professional and Continuing Studies (School) has grown and is recognized as a premier provider of continuing education; and

WHEREAS, the School relocated as it developed to meet the demand of its students, holding classes in the Columbia Building at Grace and Lombardy Streets, Second Baptist Church, Richmond Hall, and the Special Programs Building; and

WHEREAS, the School has graduated more than 3,000 alumni of undergraduate and graduate degree programs and serves approximately 5,000 students each year within non-credit programs, reaching students from ages three to 93; and

WHEREAS, the School has served the community in numerous capacities by supporting the Junior College, Women’s Resource Center, Institute for Business and Community Development, School Technology Program, and the first Study Abroad Program offered at the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, the School currently serves as home of the Evening School, Summer School, Summer Study Abroad, Richmond Center for Lifelong Education, Center for Leadership in Education, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Partners in the Arts, and the Institute on Philanthropy; and

WHEREAS, the School remains dedicated to making contributions to the University and the larger community through its numerous corporate and community partnerships, thereby supporting The Richmond Promise; and

WHEREAS, University College, the School of Continuing Studies, and now the School of Professional and Continuing Studies each has introduced important innovations while remaining steadfast to the mission of educating and training thousands of Richmonders, enriching lives and careers; and

WHEREAS, the School has been sustained and advanced in its five decades by its dedicated faculty, the active involvement of alumni and friends, and support from generous donors, all of whom are a source of great pride for and the object of deep gratitude from the School and the University; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for the School’s continued success.
