Celebrating the life of Sydney Emmanuel Albrittain.

WHEREAS, Sydney Emmanuel Albrittain, a distinguished Korean War veteran, respected business executive, and generous community supporter from Arlington, died on June 5, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of LaPlata High School in Maryland, Sydney “Syd” Albrittain received a bachelor’s degree from what is now known as McDaniel College, where he also played football; and

WHEREAS, Syd Albrittain proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army, earning a Silver Star for heroically leading a counterattack against enemy forces on October 8, 1952, after an outpost was overrun; and

WHEREAS, following his meritorious military service, Syd Albrittain embarked on a successful career in construction and development with the Dittmar Company, overseeing construction operations and eventually taking the helm of the company in 1986; and

WHEREAS, an admired businessman committed to quality construction, Syd Albrittain led the Dittmar Company as it built thousands of homes, hotels, and office buildings across the Northern Virginia area to meet the needs of the burgeoning population; and

WHEREAS, numerous organizations and institutions across Northern Virginia benefited from Syd Albrittain’s quiet generosity, including the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington Free Clinic, and Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School; and

WHEREAS, a brilliant businessman and humble community advocate, Syd Albrittain played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Northern Virginia over the years, while his thoughtful humanitarian endeavors touched the lives of countless area residents; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep integrity and character, Syd Albrittain will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Gloria; children, Nancy, Clare, Matthew, Chris, Mary, Michael, Sydney, and Karen, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected business and community leader, Sydney Emmanuel Albrittain; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sydney Emmanuel Albrittain as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
