Celebrating the life of Anne Folkes Miller.

WHEREAS, Anne Folkes Miller, a Richmond civic leader and compelling activist, died on September 24, 2012; and

WHEREAS, at the age of 16, Anne Miller earned a bachelor’s degree from Hollins College; she later earned a master’s degree from the University of Richmond and a doctorate from Virginia Tech; and

WHEREAS, a talented and enterprising woman, Anne Miller held various professional roles over the course of her life, including women’s editor of the Richmond News Leader, advertising professional, and owner of Richmond Roundabout, a tour company; and

WHEREAS, Anne Miller was devoted to women’s issues, challenging social norms and encouraging women to become active members in their communities; and

WHEREAS, Anne Miller served as chair on the Bolling Haxall House Foundation committee and helped raise over $1 million for the Woman’s Club of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, under Anne Miller’s leadership, the Junior League of Richmond raised enough money to purchase a new headquarters; she later became the first recipient of the Barbara Ransome Andrews Award for her exemplary service; and

WHEREAS, during the 1970s, Anne Miller was a charter member and the first executive director of Leadership Metro Richmond, one of her proudest accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, with Leadership Metro Richmond, Anne Miller invited leaders from different walks of life to share ideas and encourage growth in Richmond; today it boasts over 1,800 members working to ensure a bright future for the city; and

WHEREAS, Anne Miller continued to contribute to the community by leading the Richmond Community Chest women’s division, now known as the United Way; she also sat on the boards of Westminster Canterbury Richmond, the Women’s Bank, and the Garden Club of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, passionate about the arts, Anne Miller was the president of the Friends of the Richmond Public Library and the Children’s Theatre of Richmond, and sat on the Women’s Council of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; and

WHEREAS, involved in her church, Anne Miller served as one of the first female elders at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and later as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, Anne Miller is survived and dearly remembered by her husband of almost 68 years, Charles; her daughters, Lindsay and Barrie, and their families; and many treasured friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an active leader in her community and a gallant advocate for women, Anne Folkes Miller; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Anne Folkes Miller as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
