WHEREAS, Callan Bentley, a dynamic assistant professor at the Annandale campus of the Northern Virginia Community College, received the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence for serving the public by sharing his earthquake expertise in 2011; and

WHEREAS, awarded annually to one exceptional teacher in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) honors faculty who encourage learning and enhance the reputation of the VCCS; and

WHEREAS, after receiving his bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary and master’s degrees from the University of Maryland and Montana State University, Callan Bentley followed his passion, teaching and lecturing in California, Alaska, and Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, joining the Northern Virginia Community College in 2006, Callan Bentley continued to motivate students with creative teaching methods, including practical exercises and unusual field trips; and

WHEREAS, collaborating with faculty at four-year colleges, Callan Bentley has multiplied the learning opportunities for his students and enhanced the prestige of the VCCS; and

WHEREAS, Callan Bentley was nominated for the 2012 CATE award due to his passion for teaching, concern for his students, and for providing timely expertise on the earthquake that struck Virginia in 2011; and

WHEREAS, Callan Bentley was a crucial resource to many media outlets, ensuring that accurate, helpful information was disseminated to the public; and

WHEREAS, as the CATE award recipient in June 2012, Callan Bentley received a $5,000 prize and a ceremonial stole to be worn with his traditional graduation attire; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Callan Bentley for receiving the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Callan Bentley as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his expertise, service to the community, and dedication to education.
