HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 596 Offered January 9, 2013 Prefiled January 4, 2013 Celebrating the life of William Lyle Pugh, Sr. ---------- Patron-- Knight , Cosgrove, Jones and Spruill   ----------

WHEREAS, William Lyle Pugh, Sr., a farmer from Chesapeake and staunch advocate for the Commonwealth’s agricultural industry, died on July 6, 2012; and

WHEREAS, as a young man, Lyle Pugh developed a love of and appreciation for the land that would lead to a career in farming that would span six decades and take him around the world in support of the Commonwealth’s and America’s agricultural bounty; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Pugh’s firsthand farming experience, coupled with his business acumen, made him a trusted leader in the agricultural community in the Commonwealth, across the nation, and around the world; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Pugh served on the Virginia Agribusiness Council and represented the Commonwealth’s agricultural interests as president of the Virginia Corn Growers Association and Virginia Corn Board; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the U.S. Grains Council for 25 years, Lyle Pugh traveled to 13 countries promoting the Commonwealth’s and United States’ grain exports; and

WHEREAS, for 26 years, Lyle Pugh served on the Virginia Dare Soil and Water Conservation District board and provided wise insight and guidance to conserve and protect the area’s natural resources; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Pugh also served as a member of the Colonial Farm Credit board, president of the Chesapeake Farm Bureau, and honorary vice chair of the Chesapeake 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee, and faithfully attended Great Bridge Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, known for his kind heart and willingness to be of service, Lyle Pugh will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Margaret; children, Christine, Lyle, Leslie, and Lynnette and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected agricultural leader, William Lyle Pugh, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Lyle Pugh, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
