13100237DWHEREAS, Robert M. Berry, the general manager of the Richmond Metropolitan Authority, retired in 2012 after 26 years of distinguished service; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of the University of Richmond, Robert “Mike” Berry received a master’s degree from Virginia Tech and gained valuable experience as the assistant director of planning for Henrico County before joining the Richmond Metropolitan Authority (RMA) as general manager in 1986; and
WHEREAS, for more than two decades, Mike Berry provided visionary leadership and sound management over the RMA’s projects, which include the Downtown Expressway, Powhite Parkway, The Diamond, Main Street Station, and several parking decks; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Mike Berry worked collaboratively with city and county officials and RMA employees to provide the users of RMA facilities the most efficient and effective service and operation; and
WHEREAS, during Mike Berry’s tenure as general manager, tolling facilities received major upgrades, The Diamond underwent renovations, the number of lanes on the James River Bridge increased, and open-road tolling projects on the Powhite Parkway and Downtown Expressway reached completion; and
WHEREAS, local commuters and visitors to the Richmond metropolitan area reaped the benefits of Mike Berry’s foresight and planning as they traveled along the Downtown Expressway and Powhite Parkway, attended a ball game, and visited historic Main Street Station; and
WHEREAS, for 26 years, Mike Berry played a pivotal role in helping meet the Richmond metropolitan area’s transportation needs and keeping Richmond-area residents and visitors on the move; and
WHEREAS, in his well-deserved retirement, Mike Berry looks forward to spending time with his family and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Robert M. Berry for his exemplary service as general manager of the Richmond Metropolitan Authority on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert M. Berry as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his commitment to the Richmond metropolitan area.
