Commending Philip Watlington.

WHEREAS, Philip Watlington, whose familiar voice has reached countless listeners over the airwaves and at community events throughout Southside Virginia, celebrated 50 years of broadcasting in 2012; and

WHEREAS, in July 1962, Philip “Phil” Watlington began his career with Piedmont Broadcasting Corporation and WBTM-AM radio; he later played an instrumental role in the establishment of its sister station, WAKG-FM; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure at Piedmont Broadcasting Corporation, Phil Watlington served in various positions, including as an on-air personality, production director, public service director, news announcer, and program director; and

WHEREAS, Phil Watlington has seen many changes in the broadcasting industry, both in technology and in popular styles of music; and

WHEREAS, Phil Watlington has provided countless hours of listening enjoyment to fans across Southside Virginia, most recently as producer and host of “Sunday Swing Shift,” the popular swing-style music program; and

WHEREAS, an important member of the local community, Phil Watlington has emceed Fourth of July celebrations, produced public service announcements, and taken part in Averett University stage productions; and

WHEREAS, a classical music expert and collector, Phil Watlington has also served as the “voice” of the Danville Symphony Orchestra for the past decade, narrating and announcing at concerts; and

WHEREAS, Phil Watlington has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to excellence in broadcasting and dedication to the community throughout his 50-year career; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Philip Watlington on the occasion of his golden anniversary in broadcasting; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Philip Watlington as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his contributions to broadcasting and Southside Virginia.
