Celebrating the life of Ira L. Andrews III.

WHEREAS, Ira L. Andrews III, the beloved professor emeritus and former dean of students at Randolph-Macon College, who served under five school presidents and helped lead the student body through changing times, died on August 16, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Ira Andrews began his affiliation with Randolph-Macon College as an undergraduate, earned induction into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society and became a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Clericus, and the Glee Club; and

WHEREAS, upon graduation, Ira Andrews earned a master of divinity degree from Emory University and then returned to Randolph-Macon College as a professor of religious studies; Randolph-Macon College later awarded him an honorary doctorate; and

WHEREAS, Ira Andrews served as dean of students for 35 years at Randolph-Macon College, guiding the student body through the turbulent Vietnam War era and as the school transitioned from an all-male campus to a coeducational one in the early 1970s; and

WHEREAS, a servant leader who embraced new ideas while preserving Randolph-Macon College values, Ira Andrews labored diligently on behalf of his students, the Randolph-Macon community, and the local community with great enthusiasm and good nature; and

WHEREAS, a popular teacher and gifted scholar, Ira Andrews served as an outstanding role model for students and earned the Samuel Nelson Gray Distinguished Professor Award and the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry Exemplary Teaching Award; and

WHEREAS, a respected state and national leader in student affairs, Ira Andrews served as president and state director for the Virginia and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, now known as Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education; and

WHEREAS, Ira Andrews also took an active role in religious and civic organizations, including Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church Conference boards, the Patrick Henry Family YMCA, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, the Hanover County Council of PTAs, and the Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad; and

WHEREAS, in retirement, Ira Andrews continued to be a part of the Randolph-Macon College community as a mentor and advisor and member of the board of trustees Subcommittee on Church Relations and board of directors for the A. Purnell Bailey Pre-Ministerial Program for Ordained Ministry; and

WHEREAS, Randolph-Macon College honored Ira Andrews for his longtime service and significant contributions with the Noe-Kilgore Award and the Society of Alumni Faculty Service Certificate of Appreciation, the establishment of a seating area in his name at the Janet Harvey Trivette ’78 Alumni Walkway; and the naming of its new residence hall, Andrews Hall, in his honor; and

WHEREAS, a part of the Randolph-Macon College community for more than 50 years, Ira Andrews touched the lives of countless individuals over the years and helped shape the community that continues to welcome students from around the world; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Ira Andrews will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Anne; children, Skip and Gwendolyn, and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and former students and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an esteemed educator and beloved member of the Randolph-Macon College community, Ira L. Andrews III; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ira L. Andrews III as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
