13100087DWHEREAS, on June 29, 2012, an unusual and powerful storm struck the City of Staunton; and
WHEREAS, the storm, known as a derecho, knocked out power to most Staunton residents and caused extensive damage in the middle of a dangerous heat wave; and
WHEREAS, area residents struggled to clear debris and find shelter from the 100-plus temperatures while also facing the loss of electricity, and in some cases cell phone and Internet coverage; and
WHEREAS, the City of Staunton Department of Public Works, staffed by a team of dedicated professionals, immediately went to work clearing branches, trees, and other debris from roads and other critical locations to aid in recovery efforts; and
WHEREAS, the City of Staunton Department of Public Works’ crews continued their hard work for several weeks, traveling down the streets of Staunton several times to collect thousands of cubic feet of debris left from the storm; and
WHEREAS, the City of Staunton Department of Public Works’ employees demonstrated great civic spirit, dedication, and commitment to their fellow residents as they worked to help the city recover from the damaging effects of the derecho; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the City of Staunton Department of Public Works for its efforts to restore services in the aftermath of the June 29, 2012, derecho; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Thomas Sliwoski, Director of the City of Staunton Department of Public Works, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the department’s commitment to serving area residents.
