13100820DBe it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. The Judicial Council of Virginia shall
report to the General Assembly on the use of law clerks in the courts of record
of the Commonwealth. Such report shall detail the number of law clerks
authorized or funded by the state or local government and the number of
positions actually filled; to which court or judge each law clerk is assigned
and whether they are assigned per judge or used in a pool; the types of tasks
law clerks are assigned (e.g., preapproval of divorce decrees, support orders,
name changes, concealed weapons permits, legal research, opinion writing,
in-court duties, etc.); salary and benefits of law clerks; whether law clerk
positions are funded by the state or by localities; length of contract of a
typical law clerk; workload of law clerks in general and of the law clerks
assigned to the [ general legal research section of the Supreme Court
or Legal Research Department of the Supreme Court's ]
Executive Secretary's office specifically; and an estimate of the number of
hours each judge in each circuit is available to hear cases but for the
assistance of law clerks. This report shall be received by the General Assembly
no later than December 1, 2013.
