2012 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, the City of Alexandria held a ceremony on April 17, 2012, as part of the weeklong national commemoration of the Days of Remembrance, Yom HaShoah, April 15 through April 22; and
WHEREAS, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum leads the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust during the Days of Remembrance; for the past 25 years, the City of Alexandria has held a Days of Remembrance ceremony that brings together community members to remember the victims of the Holocaust; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, the Nazi regime and its collaborators persecuted and murdered approximately six million Jews; other victims included Gypsies, the mentally and physically disabled, Soviet prisoners of war, non-Jewish Polish intelligentsia, Polish and Soviet civilians, homosexuals, political opponents, religious dissidents, and persons whose behavior did not match prescribed social norms; and
WHEREAS, on April 17, 2012, residents of the City of Alexandria gathered to remember the victims of the Holocaust with Hans Peter Manz, Ambassador of Austria to the United States, delivering remarks; and
WHEREAS, William D. Euille, mayor of the City of Alexandria, and city council members lit a solid brass candelabrum donated to the city by Holocaust survivor Charlene Schiff and her husband, Ed, in memory of her parents, sister, and other victims of the Holocaust; and
WHEREAS, the event, a solemn observance, provides area residents with the opportunity to remember those who perished during the Holocaust, reflect upon the consequences of intolerance and hatred, and honor the survivors and their rescuers and liberators; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the City of Alexandria’s observance of the Days of Remembrance hereby be commended; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William D. Euille, the mayor of the City of Alexandria, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s appreciation for the city’s commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust.
