12200055DWHEREAS, Gus’s Hot Dog King, a favorite among residents in Newport News, will celebrate 40 years of outstanding service to its customers on April 1, 2012; and
WHEREAS, opened in 1972 by Gus Garofalis and his brother, George, Gus’s Hot Dog King welcomed customers to its small, triangular-shaped structure that at first just had a counter and stools; it was later expanded to allow for tables and chairs; and
WHEREAS, Gus’s Hot Dog King became a family affair, with Stavroula Garofalis, the wife of Gus Garofalis, working at the cash register at lunchtime before returning home to care for their two sons, George and Bobby; and
WHEREAS, a second location of Gus’s Hot Dog King was opened in the Denbigh section of the city and was operated by both families for a few years after Gus Garofalis’s death until his brother, George, and his family took over the operation of that location; and
WHEREAS, in 2003, Stavroula Garofalis was joined by her son, George, at the original location, and they opened another location of the popular restaurant in Williamsburg; and
WHEREAS, throughout the years, customers have flocked to Gus’s Hot Dog King to enjoy regular and foot-long hot dogs grilled to perfection and topped with chili, coleslaw, onions, pickles, sauerkraut, and jalapenos; and
WHEREAS, the Garofalises have expanded the menu over time to now include chicken salad, corn dogs, onion rings, and funnel fries for dessert; and
WHEREAS, Gus’s Hot Dog King takes great pride in being a part of the community and looks forward to celebrating its 40th anniversary with its loyal customers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Gus’s Hot Dog King hereby be commended on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Gus’s Hot Dog King as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s congratulations and appreciation for the restaurant’s dedication to its customers.
