Celebrating the life of Urban O. Cleek.

WHEREAS, Urban O. Cleek, a Bath County resident whose stalwart support of area students as an educator and member of the board of supervisors and school board touched the lives of countless individuals, died on March 5, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a native of Warm Springs, Urban “Jake” Cleek proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army before returning to Bath County and embarking on a career in education that would span decades; and

WHEREAS, a popular teacher and coach, Jake Cleek spent his entire career at Bath County Public Schools, serving as director of instruction and becoming the first principal of Bath County High School when two county high schools merged; and

WHEREAS, Jake Cleek enthusiastically supported county students in their endeavors, attending countless athletic events and working to ensure a positive learning environment where all students could excel; and

WHEREAS, Jake Cleek brought a wealth of leadership experience to the Bath County Board of Supervisors and championed education as a 12-year member of the school board, making many invaluable contributions to Bath County residents and students while in public service; and

WHEREAS, a familiar face in the community known for his welcoming and friendly manner, Jake Cleek operated Cleek’s Hardware on Main Street, and, in retirement, worked as a locker room attendant at the Cascades Golf Resort; and

WHEREAS, Jake Cleek attended Hot Springs Presbyterian Church and served area residents as a member of the Hot Springs Moose Lodge and former member of the Hot Springs Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, a 40-year member of the Fort Lewis Hunt Club, Jake Cleek spent countless hours riding and breeding a wide variety of horses; in addition, he enjoyed woodworking and growing flowers in his yard; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated educator and committed community citizen, Jake Cleek will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, T.D.; children, Jeffrey and Natalie, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, former students, and neighbors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved citizen of Bath County, Urban O. Cleek; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Urban O. Cleek as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
