Commending People to People.

WHEREAS, People to People is recognized for its 20 years of tireless service on the Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, People to People was formed exclusively for the improvement of race relations and the quality of life of the citizens of Newport News and, more specifically, to provide a catalyst for greater personal dialogue among residents of the City in an effort to focus on community needs; and

WHEREAS, People to People continues to strive to develop a common perspective, to actively engage in a concerted effort to motivate government and citizen action, and to improve the quality of life on the Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, People to People’s continuous success is greatly due to its founders and first co-chairs, Herbert V. Kelly, Sr. (1992 - 2007) and McKinley L. Price (1992 - 2010); and

WHEREAS, People to People’s entire founding body has remained dedicated to the charge of improving race relations and quality of life on the Virginia Peninsula; and

WHEREAS, co-chairs, including Bud Ramey, Dr. Elva Hunt, Howard Gwynn, and Susan Piland, have demonstrated solid leadership in developing the organization’s history and reputation as helping make the community a better place to live; and

WHEREAS, People to People, through community forum events, evening lecture series, civic engagement, and diverse positioning, has helped the City of Newport News wade through some of the most controversial and racially charged times of the last three decades; and

WHEREAS, People to People executive committee members Gray Bowditch, Ché Henderson, and John Tupponce use this unique history to leverage the next generation of civic and professional thirsting talents to build bridges by maximizing opportunities and addressing challenges; and

WHEREAS, People to People, through its diverse leadership resources, creates change to effectively move the community from conversation to action; and

WHEREAS, People to People continues to work successfully with the City of Newport News and Hampton on projects and has gained a reputation as an enduring partner with the public arena and in an ever-changing political landscape; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That People to People hereby be commended on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to People to People as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the organization’s commitment to serving the residents of the Virginia Peninsula.
