12200173DWHEREAS, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., will celebrate 50 years of broadcasting Tabernacle Time, the oldest daily religious broadcast in the nation, in 2012; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., grew up in a deeply spiritual household led by the Reverend R.J. Barber, Sr., founder of the Baptist Tabernacle in Danville, who began the Tabernacle Time radio broadcast in 1932; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., answered the call to ministry as a young man, completed his seminary studies in Fort Worth, Texas, and founded the Worth Baptist Church in 1954; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., led the Worth Baptist Church congregation with great dedication and zeal until 1961, when he moved to Danville upon the death of his father to assume the pastorship of Baptist Tabernacle and continue the Tabernacle Time broadcast; and
WHEREAS, under the guidance of “Brother Bob,” as the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., is fondly known, Baptist Tabernacle continued to grow and flourish in faith and numbers, eventually necessitating a move to its current location; and
WHEREAS, in 1986 the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., retired from the pastorate of Baptist Tabernacle; he later served as a pastor at what is now Spring Garden Community Church; and
WHEREAS, over the years, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., followed in his father’s footsteps, broadcasting the gospel message through the beloved Tabernacle Time program; and
WHEREAS, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., has touched the lives of millions of individuals in the Dan River Region over the decades as he has shared his faith and the gospel message during Tabernacle Time; and
WHEREAS, for half a century, the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., has persevered in sharing the gospel through Tabernacle Time, despite financial hardships and health problems; and
WHEREAS, countless listeners have had their spirits lifted and hearts strengthened through the timeless messages delivered by the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., through the Tabernacle Time radio broadcast; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., hereby be commended for 50 years of providing listeners with an inspiring message through the Tabernacle Time radio broadcast; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend R.J. Barber, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for his dedication to serving others through his radio broadcast ministry.
