HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 585
Celebrating the life of Donald K. Lawson.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 14, 2012

 

WHEREAS, Donald K. Lawson, a noted businessman and civic supporter from Martinsville, died on May 24, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of North Carolina, Donald “Don” Lawson attended Fieldale-Collinsville High School; graduated from Chadsey High School and the Chadsey School of Culinary Arts in Detroit, Michigan; and later took classes in real estate law at Patrick Henry Community College; and

WHEREAS, a well-known figure in the community, Don Lawson worked as a plant/department manager at the Bassett-Walker Knitting Co. before joining the family business, Lawson’s Decorating and Home Furnishings, as the owner/operator; he also leased residential housing; and

WHEREAS, Don Lawson freely gave his time and talents to his fellow residents as a former member of the Martinsville Rotary Club and member of Chatmoss Baptist Church, where he enjoyed worship, fellowship, and service; and

WHEREAS, a staunch Republican, Don Lawson enthusiastically supported local, state, and national candidates and encouraged others to become knowledgeable about and involved in the political process; and

WHEREAS, Don Lawson served as chair of the Henry County Republican Committee for over 14 years and as vice-chair of the Fifth Congressional District Republican Committee and Twentieth Senatorial District Republican Committee; and

WHEREAS, Don Lawson was appointed by Governor Gilmore to the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, where he served on the subcommittee on education with great diligence; and

WHEREAS, a man of firm principles known for his affable manner and commitment to serving others, Don Lawson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of the Commonwealth, Donald K. Lawson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Donald K. Lawson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
