2012 SPECIAL SESSION I
12200093DWHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Roy Begland, USA (Ret.), a distinguished veteran who traveled around the world in service to his country before settling in Smithfield and establishing a business and working as an executive coach and leadership consultant, died on April 1, 2012; and
WHEREAS, a native of Ohio, Robert “Bob” Begland graduated from Ohio State University, where he met his wife, Judy Ann, and embarked on an exemplary military career as a second lieutenant in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, a highly skilled Ranger, Bob Begland was an expert in jungle warfare, leading an infantry platoon during the Vietnam War and earning a Combat Infantry Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart; he also commanded a company after the war; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong learner, Bob Begland furthered his education by earning a master’s degree from Wayne State University and a doctorate from Florida State University while serving in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, a respected officer, Bob Begland trained incoming lieutenants, authored several articles in military journals on new methods of selecting and training officers and soldiers, and served as an exchange officer to the British Army before relocating to Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Bob Begland served two tours at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe and completed his last assignment at Old Dominion University as a professor of military science and battalion commander, overseeing the assessment and selection of all ROTC cadets on the East Coast; and
WHEREAS, following his retirement from the United States Army, Bob Begland began a second career as an executive coach and leadership consultant, drawing upon his extensive experience and expertise to help organizations and individuals achieve their goals; and
WHEREAS, Bob Begland also owned and operated, with his wife and daughter, Wharf Hill Antiques in Smithfield, providing customers with excellent service and a variety of antiques and unique gifts; and
WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, honor, and vision, Bob Begland faithfully served his country and made many contributions to his branch of the service over the course of his distinguished military career; and
WHEREAS, a devoted husband and father, Bob Begland will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Judy Ann; children, Robert, Jr., Michael, and Christina and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, students, and soldiers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding Virginian, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Roy Begland, USA (Ret.); and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Roy Begland as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
