HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 557
Commending Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 17, 2012

 

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School in Loudoun County is commended for its successful efforts to prevent childhood bullying through the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program; and

WHEREAS, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP), one of the nation’s best-known bullying prevention programs, works to reduce bullying problems and prevent new bullying; and

WHEREAS, OBPP serves all students, not just those who are being bullied or who are bullying others, in an effort to make all relationships among students better; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School, under the leadership of principal Michele Salzano, believes that bullying should not be seen as “kids being kids” or something that students just need to deal with—the school believes that all students should be able to enjoy a safe school experience; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School, named for Vice Admiral Gravely, has embraced his motto for success, which incorporates education, motivation, and perseverance; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School was honored for its focus on excellence with a 2009 - 2010 School of Excellence recognition and 2011 Board of Education Excellence Award; its Odyssey of the Mind team took eighth place at the Prince William County competition; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School students undertake a rigorous academic curriculum that is enhanced through technology, writing, and hands-on science experiments and participate in a variety of before and after school clubs; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School students learn about a variety of subjects through the observance of national month designations, such as National Nutrition Month, Women’s History Month, and Keep America Beautiful Month; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School students also participated in the Prince William County Art Festival on March 24, 2012, with one student winning the White Ribbon for Best in Show; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School students will display their art at the Kelly Leadership Center and University of Mary Washington Education Building; and

WHEREAS, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School administration, teachers, and staff have worked to create a positive and bullying-free environment where students can excel in their endeavors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School hereby be commended on its antibullying program; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michele Salzano, principal of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the school’s commitment to its students.
