Commending Horizon Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School celebrates 13 years of service to the families of Sterling in Loudoun County in 2012; and

WHEREAS, for the past 11 years, Horizon Elementary School students and faculty and community members have worked on the school’s courtyard and garden to give students a small nature retreat during school; the courtyard, setup as a butterfly garden, provides beauty, integrates studies, and is a low-maintenance garden for students; and

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School is a culturally responsive and student-centered environment where staff, parents, students, and community work together to ensure the success of all learners; and

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School strives to provide a safe learning environment that enhances creativity, generates enthusiasm, and embraces the special talents and individual contributions of students; and

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School offers Student Services to engage the students in fun activities such as the Comet Council and the Horizon TV team; and

WHEREAS, Comet Council Members work together to plan various events and help other students; Horizon TV team members run the morning news program one day a week for half of the school year; and

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School incorporates the use of technology across the curriculum with a wide array of technological resources available for use; and

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School takes great pride in the accomplishments of its students; one student won highest honors at the WordMasters Challenge—a national language arts competition with approximately 220,000 students competing nationwide; and

WHEREAS, the competition consists of three separate meets held at intervals throughout the school year; competing in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge, a fifth grade Horizon Elementary School student earned a perfect score in the year’s second meet, one of only 224 fifth graders from around the country to do so; and

WHEREAS, Horizon Elementary School looks forward to continuing to provide a superior education to its students in an environment that includes a variety of learning tools and experiences; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Horizon Elementary School hereby be commended on the occasion of its 13th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jennifer Ewing, principal of Horizon Elementary School, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the school’s commitment to its students.
