HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 547
Commending Stone Hill Middle School.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 17, 2012

 

WHEREAS, Stone Hill Middle School, which opened in 2006, celebrates its sixth anniversary of serving the families of Ashburn in Loudoun County in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Stone Hill Middle School, under the leadership of founding principal Rodney Moore, strives to prepare students for life after middle school and works closely with students, families, and the community to provide a superior education, safe school, and climate for success; and

WHEREAS, in order to prepare the students of Stone Hill Middle School for the global society of the 21st century, the Foreign Language Division of the Department of Instruction affords students from elementary through high school the opportunity to study an array of foreign languages; and

WHEREAS, the Foreign Language program includes Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES), Spanish at the Middle Schools (SAMS), and Secondary Foreign Language instruction; 64 percent of seventh graders and 82 percent of eighth graders are currently enrolled in high school foreign language classes; and

WHEREAS, the Art Department at Stone Hill Middle School provides students with a sequential, concept-based visual art instruction program consisting of art production, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism with an emphasis on the studio process, allowing students to have multidisciplinary and multicultural experiences to make real-life connections; and

WHEREAS, music education is also important at Stone Hill Middle School, where students have the opportunity to participate in band, chorus, strings, and general music; and

WHEREAS, students at Stone Hill Middle School also have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as the All-County Elementary Chorus, Regional Orchestra, All-County Orchestra, All-County Guitar, All-County Chorus, All-District Jazz Band, All-District Band, All-District Chorus, District Band Festival, District Choral Festival, All-County Guitar Festival, District Jazz Festival, Solo and Ensemble Festival, State Marching Festival, All-Virginia Band and Orchestra, All-Virginia Chorus, Honors Choir, and Honors Jazz Band; and

WHEREAS, at Stone Hill Middle School students are given the opportunity to experience how the application of old, new, and emerging technologies affect everyday lives through technology education, a semester class that enables students to become technologically literate; and

WHEREAS, technology education at Stone Hill Middle School reaches beyond basic computer systems and ideas and incorporates and complements science, mathematics, and other disciplines; after an orientation period, students select from various technology modules that they would like to explore; and

WHEREAS, in those modules, the approach to learning is self-directed, allowing the students to experience the most innovative and modern learning approaches in technology education with a hands-on exploratory philosophy, interacting with robots, lasers, machines controlled by computers, and other high-tech equipment; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with Stone Hill Middle School’s mission to prepare students for life after middle school, sixth-grade students are given the opportunity to explore a college campus with student tour guides to gain an understanding of a college environment; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to the success and well-being of its students, Stone Hill Middle School looks forward to continuing to provide a superior education with the support of outstanding leaders and dedicated teachers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Stone Hill Middle School hereby be commended on the occasion of its sixth anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rodney Moore, principal of Stone Hill Middle School, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the school’s commitment to its students.
