HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5029
Commending the James Madison High School band program.

WHEREAS, the James Madison High School band program was honored for its consistent commitment to superior standards of excellence in concert activities with the highest accolade for a high school band program, The Sudler Flag of Honor, from The John Philip Sousa Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the James Madison High School band program met certain criteria and underwent a rigorous application process by a panel of high school band directors and university conductors to become one of only three high school bands from across the nation chosen to receive the 2011 award; and

WHEREAS, the James Madison High School band program joins the ranks of fewer than 75 high schools that have earned the prestigious honor, with the 2011 win making it one of only five band programs to twice earn the coveted award; and

WHEREAS, under the direction of Michael Hackbarth, the talented James Madison High School band program members have continued the program’s proud tradition of musical excellence and outstanding performances that delight audiences; and

WHEREAS, the James Madison High School band program will receive The Sudler Flag of Honor from The John Philip Sousa Foundation at a special concert and ceremony at the school’s auditorium on May 22, 2012; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the James Madison High School band program on its selection as a recipient of The Sudler Flag of Honor from The John Philip Sousa Foundation; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael Hackbarth, director of the James Madison High School band program, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and appreciation for the program’s many accomplishments.
