12200079DWHEREAS, the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team from Winchester capped an outstanding and record-breaking 2011 - 2012 season by winning its third consecutive Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state title—a Virginia High School League record for girls’ basketball; and
WHEREAS, on its way to the championship game, the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team defeated Carroll County High School in the state semifinal game, winning its 79th consecutive game, which broke a 61-year-old state record for most consecutive games won by a girls’ basketball team; and
WHEREAS, the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team faced undefeated Courtland High School before an enthusiastic crowd at the Virginia Commonwealth University Siegel Center for the championship game; and
WHEREAS, the Courtland High School Cougars scored the first four points of the game but the Millbrook High School Pioneers answered by scoring eight of the next 12 points and had a 15 - 4 run later in the first quarter to hold the lead, ending the first half ahead 29 - 21; and
WHEREAS, the Courtland High School girls’ basketball team rallied in the third quarter but the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team kept the lead to win its 80th consecutive game with a 63 - 38 score and claim the state title; and
WHEREAS, the 2011 - 2012 Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team became the first girls’ basketball team in Virginia High School League history to win three consecutive state titles; and
WHEREAS, the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team has compiled an impressive 105 - 3 record over the past four years, set a Northwestern District record by winning 48 straight games since 2008, and defeated its opponents by an average of 36.4 points over the past four years; and
WHEREAS, the entire team—Kylene Rooks, Brooke Borlie, Amanda Barlow, Ashley Goodman, Casey Ackerman, Courtni Green, Alisha Mobley, Sara Mead, Danielle Banks, Lisa Merriman, Diauna Farrish, and Stephanie Hernandez—worked hard and contributed to the team’s incredible performance; and
WHEREAS, the tremendous success of the 2011 - 2012 Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team is a tribute to the team’s hard work and talent; the leadership of head coach Debby Sanders and assistant coaches Curtis Hunter, Kevin Barr, and Chad Wines; and the support of the Millbrook High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team on winning the 2011 - 2012 Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state title; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Debby Sanders, head coach of the Millbrook High School girls’ basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding season and record-setting performance.
