2012 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Michael Allen Jenkins, a man who shared inspiring words of redeeming love, hope, and faith from the sidelines of Gate City High School sports games, to prisons, and to the orphanages of Africa, died on March 22, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Michael “Mike” Jenkins underwent many trials and tribulations as a young man; after experiencing a personal conversion, his life was changed and he devoted himself to helping youth and families through his own ministry, Mike Jenkins Evangelistic Association; and
WHEREAS, Mike Jenkins traveled throughout Southwest Virginia and the nation, holding four-day revivals and school assemblies where he encouraged youth to respect themselves and make wise choices; and
WHEREAS, Mike Jenkins was a familiar face at Gate City High School athletic events and activities, taking part in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and See You at the Pole events and offering words of encouragement from the sidelines of football and basketball games; and
WHEREAS, a motivational speaker, Mike Jenkins connected with area youth, sharing his own life experiences and taking a genuine interest in the welfare and spiritual lives of students, which deeply touched them; and
WHEREAS, Mike Jenkins took his words of redemption, change, and spiritual freedom to men and women in prison, both at home and abroad; he traveled to Iceland and several times to Africa, speaking to those imprisoned there; and
WHEREAS, during his latest trip to Africa, Mike Jenkins also spoke at schools and orphanages, fed thousands of children and families, and spoke at a three-day event to share the Christian message with the people of Nakuru, Kenya, and the surrounding area; and
WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mike Jenkins pointed others to the source of his strength and conviction as he followed the Great Commission; and
WHEREAS, Mike Jenkins leaves behind to cherish his memory many loving family members and friends; area students; and countless other individuals whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a remarkable Virginian, Michael Allen Jenkins; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Michael Allen Jenkins as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
