Commending The Salvation Army's Charlottesville Corps.

WHEREAS, in 2012 The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps celebrates its 100th anniversary of lending a hand to those in need; and

WHEREAS, the work of The Salvation Army, which is known throughout the country for providing an array of services to the less fortunate residents of a community, focuses on a region’s greatest needs; and

WHEREAS, The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps has devoted much effort to alleviating homelessness; in 2010 the group provided emergency shelter to 1,575 individuals, assisted 125 people in homeless intervention, and hosted nine families for up to two years in a transitional housing program; and

WHEREAS, The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps also runs a soup kitchen that served 53,032 meals in 2010, and its well-known Thrift Store, which is a magnet for bargain shoppers, funded $47,075 for service programs; and

WHEREAS, the successful charitable work of The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps stems chiefly from the organization’s dedicated staff and a large number of volunteers, enabling the group to provide services in an efficient and effective manner; and

WHEREAS, since its founding in Charlottesville in 1912, The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps has sought to serve the neediest in the community, and in this endeavor, it has been strongly and consistently supported by the residents of the Charlottesville area; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Salvation Army’s Charlottesville Corps as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its many good works and best wishes in its continuing efforts to help those in need.
