Celebrating the life of Frederick M. Crabtree, Sr.

WHEREAS, Frederick M. Crabtree, Sr., a longtime Fairfax County Park Authority board member affectionately known as Mr. Baseball for his support of the sport in Northern Virginia, died on March 11, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a veteran of World War II, Frederick “Fred” Crabtree spent most of his adult life in the Town of Vienna, making many substantial and lasting contributions to Fairfax County that will continue to enrich the lives of local residents for years to come; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crabtree served as a volunteer with the Vienna Little League for more than half a century, sharing his love of the game and supporting local youth with great enthusiasm; and

WHEREAS, eager for all youth to participate in his favorite game, Fred Crabtree formed the Challenger division of Vienna Little League for youth with disabilities, which expanded nationwide; he also created accessible basketball and softball programs; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crabtree served on the Fairfax County Park Authority board from 1969 to 1992, serving as chair, vice-chair, and secretary/treasurer at various times; and

WHEREAS, a visionary leader, Fred Crabtree played a pivotal role in the acquisition of land for Fairfax County parks, ensuring that future generations of residents would have the opportunity to enjoy open spaces and natural settings; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crabtree helped create the Elly Doyle Park Service Award, which honors the contributions of individuals or groups to the park system; and

WHEREAS, Fred Crabtree earned many awards and accolades throughout his career and the Fairfax County Park Authority recognized him for his legacy of service to Fairfax County parks with the renaming of Fox Mill District Park in his name in 2006; and

WHEREAS, a beloved resident of Fairfax County, Fred Crabtree, predeceased by his wife, Ann Ruth, will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Joyce and Rick, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and those whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired citizen of Fairfax County, Frederick M. Crabtree, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Frederick M. Crabtree, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
