SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 18
Commending Nathan Hatfield.

WHEREAS, Nathan Hatfield, Assistant Clerk of the Senate of Virginia, serves as Associate Vice President of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries (ASLCS) for 2011–2012; and

WHEREAS, the ASLCS was founded in 1943 to improve legislative administration and establish better communication among clerks, secretaries, and their staffs throughout the United States and its territories; and

WHEREAS, in 1974, the ASLCS was one of several state legislative groups to form the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), and the society remains the most active of NCSL’s 10 staff sections; and

WHEREAS, the ASLCS has a membership of over 300 principal clerks and secretaries, as well as legislative support staff representing all 50 states and several United States territories; and

WHEREAS, since attending his first ASLCS Professional Development Program in 2002, Nathan Hatfield has been an active member in the society’s many programs and seminars, serving as a facilitator in breakout sessions held during the society’s professional development annual meeting and traveling to Oregon to observe the inner workings of the state legislature as a participant in the 2005 Associate Exchange Program; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Hatfield has spent countless hours working to provide a forum in which clerks and secretaries can meet and learn from one another in his role as vice chair of the Program Development Committee and as the vice chair of the Membership and Communication Committee; and

WHEREAS, prior to his election as Associate Vice President, Nathan Hatfield worked assiduously to advance the skills and professionalism of ASLCS members as cochair of the Professional Journal Committee and as an appointed associate member (2009–2010) and as an elected associate member (2010–2011) on the ASLCS Executive Committee; and

WHEREAS, with his characteristic dedication and enthusiasm, Nathan Hatfield will continue to represent the Commonwealth with distinction as the Associate Vice President of the ASLCS for 2011–2012; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Nathan Hatfield be hereby commended and congratulated on his selection as Associate Vice President of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nathan Hatfield as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s appreciation for his exemplary service to the Senate and his commitment to his profession.
