2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, Thomas Wilson Chadwick, a former legislative staffer, retired government official, and community volunteer from Alexandria, died on June 21, 2011; and
WHEREAS, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, Thomas “Tom” Chadwick grew up on Wadmalaw Island and in Charleston before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a Seabee; and
WHEREAS, following his military service, Tom Chadwick attended the University of South Carolina and began his career working at The State, where he covered state politics and other news of interest to readers; and
WHEREAS, Tom Chadwick became actively involved in the Democratic Party, eventually relocating to Northern Virginia, where he served United States Senator Olin D. Johnston in various roles, including as press secretary, legislative assistant, and campaign manager; and
WHEREAS, a hardworking staffer admired for his strong organizational ability, Tom Chadwick helped manage Senator Johnston’s reelection campaign and worked on the presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson, President Kennedy, President Johnson, and Hubert Humphrey; and
WHEREAS, Tom Chadwick also rendered invaluable service as an advance coordinator for President Johnson on domestic and foreign trips that included official visits to Vietnam and Thailand; and
WHEREAS, after the death of Senator Johnston, Tom Chadwick began a successful 21-year career with the United States Postal Service; he served for 14 of those years as the Consumer Advocate, managing the Office of Consumer Affairs and working to resolve consumer issues; and
WHEREAS, Tom Chadwick took an active role in the local community over the years, sharing his extensive expertise and experience dealing with consumer affairs with the Fairfax County Consumer Protection Commission; and
WHEREAS, Tom Chadwick was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church, volunteering as a vestry member, senior warden, Sunday School teacher, lay Eucharistic minister, lay reader, lay pastoral care minister, and trustee over the years; and
WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, intelligence, and compassion, Tom Chadwick leaves behind a sterling legacy of service to his family, community, and country; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his first wife, Betty Rose, Tom Chadwick will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Ann; children, Alice, Thomas, and Carlton, and their families; stepdaughters, Janet and Joyce, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Thomas Wilson Chadwick; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Wilson Chadwick as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
