SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 46
Commending the Peninsula Fine Arts Center.

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Arts Association was founded in 1962 as a chapter of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; and

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Arts Association was renamed the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, became an affiliate of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and moved to its present location in 1978; and

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center has served the Hampton Roads community for 50 years; and

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center is a vibrant organization that serves as educator and catalyst for awareness and understanding of visual arts—through the art within five gallery spaces and the educational programs provided for adults and children; and

WHEREAS, not being collections-bound, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center constantly changes exhibitions with an energy and freedom that excites the senses and illuminates the world like no other art center in the region; and

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center is one of only 20 Arts Centers accredited by the American Association of Museums; and

WHEREAS, education programs include, but are not limited to, a distance learning project for teachers and students; after-school classes; Studio Art School classes available year-round; a summer art camp for students; a permanent children’s gallery called “Hands On For Kids” open six days a week; a comprehensive program of in-school, on-site, and outreach opportunities; and guided tours accompanied by hands-on activities available throughout the year exploring the exhibitions; and

WHEREAS, exhibitions feature art of regional and national interest, contemporary and historical works, juried exhibitions, student shows, and great diversity of subject matter; and

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center is a visual art leader, social center, hub of activity recognized for its hospitality, and facilitator of community partnerships and cross-cultural activities; and

WHEREAS, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center celebrates 50 years of effecting change in the community in 2012; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Peninsula Fine Arts Center on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for its commitment to the community and the arts.
