WHEREAS, the enterprising pupils on the team thought up their winning concept, which was to convince their fellow students that reading is more than just fun—it’s super fun—after noticing that many of their classmates did not spend much time reading; and

WHEREAS, the team, which called itself Reader Leaders, established three goals for the yearlong project: to make reading fun, put books in children’s hands, and help students choose which books to read; and

WHEREAS, the team’s efforts to meet those goals resulted in prizes that any child would love to win, including a trip during the school day to a nearby skating rink, which was for participants who earned accelerated reader points; and

WHEREAS, other projects that the team of reading cheerleaders created were a Dr. Seuss night, a public library card sign-up drive, and events that centered on Virginia Young Readers Week in November; and

WHEREAS, the team members were fourth-grade and fifth-grade students, who as part of the push to increase the number of book lovers at Cople Elementary School, also wrote book reviews to read during school announcements; and

WHEREAS, the team was coached by Anne Evans, who praised the Reader Leaders’ passion for this project, pointing out that the entire reading promotion effort originated with the students, who stayed focused on their goals, meeting at 6:45 a.m. every Wednesday; and

WHEREAS, at the competition, which was held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, the team made a three-dimensional display, had interviews with judges, and presented their display at a competition fair; now, therefore, be it
