Celebrating the life of Larry J. Saunders.

WHEREAS, Larry J. Saunders was born in the small community of Keeling in Danville and passed away on July 11, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Larry J. Saunders, a certified public accountant, graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1969 and attended Virginia State University, where he was awarded the bachelor of arts degree in accounting; and

WHEREAS, after graduation, Larry J. Saunders began his professional career in accounting; he was employed by Peat, Marwick and Mitchell (KPMG) for several years; later, in partnership with William White, he established the Saunders and White CPA firm in Roanoke and expanded the practice with a second location in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, when the partnership ended, Larry J. Saunders established Larry Saunders and Associates, Certified Public Accountants, LLC, in Richmond, and his firm became a leader among minority CPA firms in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, an avid supporter of his alma mater, Virginia State University, Larry J. Saunders used his expertise as a certified public accountant to benefit the university; he served as a member and president of the Board of Directors of Virginia State University Foundation and was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Gateway 500 facility and University Apartments at Ettrick to provide quality housing for students; he also served as a member of the board of the Virginia State University Real Estate Foundation and as the Foundation’s first president; and

WHEREAS, Larry J. Saunders was actively involved in community and civic affairs; a lifetime member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., which he supported and served in various capacities; he was a member of Club 533, The Thebans, the Jefferson Lakeside Country Club, and the North Central Richmond Kiwanis; and he was named the George F. Hixson Fellow of Kiwanis International for his generosity to the organization; and

WHEREAS, Larry J. Saunders will be remembered for his love of family, generosity, financial acumen, and devotion to Virginia State University; and

WHEREAS, with great sadness and mourning, the family, friends, and colleagues of Larry J. Saunders bid farewell until they shall see him again; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Larry J. Saunders; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Larry J. Saunders as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
