SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 241
Commending Moses Eugene Malone.

WHEREAS, Moses Eugene Malone, one of the National Basketball Association’s legendary centers, was born on March 23, 1955, in Petersburg and educated in the Petersburg Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, while a student at Petersburg High School, Moses Eugene Malone led the school to 50 straight victories and two state championships, and at the age of 19 he accomplished the rare feat of being drafted into professional basketball from high school; and

WHEREAS, Moses Eugene Malone, a relentless rebounder and effective scorer, played two successful seasons with the Utah Stars and the Spirits of St. Louis in the American Basketball Association before moving to the National Basketball Association, where he became a dominant, star player for more than a decade, leading the Houston Rockets to the NBA Finals in 1981 and the Philadelphia 76ers to the 1983 NBA championship; and

WHEREAS, Moses Eugene Malone retired from professional basketball in 1995; during his professional basketball career, he amassed a lengthy roster of achievements, including the NBA Most Valuable Player in 1979, 1982, and 1983, and the All-NBA First Team in 1979, 1982, 1983, and 1985; he remains the NBA’s all-time sixth-leading scorer and number one offensive rebounder, and he holds the NBA record for the most consecutive games (1,212 games) played without fouling out; he was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players in 1997 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001; and

WHEREAS, despite his immense success, Moses Eugene Malone never forgot his hometown of Petersburg and returned often throughout his professional basketball career to mentor Petersburg’s school children, encouraging them to dream, pursue academic excellence, and strive for success in all of their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Moses Eugene Malone continues, even after his retirement, to work quietly, without fanfare, with school children and the citizens of Petersburg, inspiring them to hope, seek positive and productive lifestyles, and shun negative and destructive paths; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Moses Eugene Malone; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Moses Eugene Malone, native son, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his service and contributions to the people of Petersburg and admiration for his many outstanding accomplishments.
