2012 SESSION
12105786DWHEREAS, Wallace T. McKeel of Charlottesville, a highly respected and award-winning employee of the Commonwealth and a dedicated community volunteer, departed this life on February 13, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Wallace “Wally” T. McKeel graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond; he earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Military Institute and a master’s degree from the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, in 1959, Wally McKeel began working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as a research scientist; in the course of his 40-year career he was recognized in many ways, including receiving a service award from the Virginia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers; and
WHEREAS, Wally McKeel was honored with the VDOT Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, and he continued to serve VDOT after retirement, helping in the agency’s Knowledge Management and Public Affairs Division; and
WHEREAS, while he was involved in VDOT’s knowledge management section, Wally McKeel was part of a team that produced an award-winning video, The Covered Bridges of Virginia, which in 2009 won a Telly Award in the TV documentary category; and
WHEREAS, Wally McKeel served in the United States Army as a reserve commissioned officer until 1969; in addition to serving his country, he was active in his community and he enjoyed fishing; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the board of directors for the Jefferson Area Board for the Aging and as a volunteer with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, which is now called Learning Ally, Wally McKeel demonstrated his strong belief in giving back to his community and helping those in need; and
WHEREAS, Wally McKeel will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family and by his many friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an esteemed citizen of the Commonwealth, Wallace T. McKeel; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Wallace T. McKeel as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
