SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 221
Commending the Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Home.

WHEREAS, in 2012, Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Home celebrates 100 years of providing exceptional retirement living choices to Virginians; its mission is to add life to years by offering a comprehensive array of retirement-living choices; and

WHEREAS, first chartered on March 23, 1912, the Home for Aged Ladies opened in Danville in 1921 to serve people who could no longer care for themselves; in 1929, a bequest made it possible for the retirement home to expand; and

WHEREAS, Alice Burton, a wealthy benefactor who had underwritten the support of two residents, generously left her home and $10,000 to the Home for Aged Ladies, the organization then was able to increase the number of residents from eight to 24 people; and

WHEREAS, after nearly 35 years in Danville, the organization broke ground in 1954 on a new retirement home site in Harrisonburg; land had been given by the Synod of Virginia, and the residents of the Home for Aged Ladies moved on October 18, 1955, from Danville to their new home in Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley; and

WHEREAS, in the last half-century, Sunnyside has expanded both on the Harrisonburg site and around the Commonwealth; the Harrisonburg campus now encompasses more than 100 acres and includes independent and assisted living residences, a health center, and a wellness and therapy center; and

WHEREAS, in recent years, the nonprofit continuing care community opened King’s Grant retirement residence in Martinsville in 1993, and in 1998, Summit Square opened in Waynesboro; expansion also occurred in Harrisonburg in 2008, with the construction of 90 cottages, villas, and townhomes; and

WHEREAS, throughout its century of existence, Sunnyside’s continuing care community has remained committed to meeting the physical, spiritual, social, psychological, and security needs of its residents in a caring Christian environment; and

WHEREAS, Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Home and its affiliates are home to more than 900 residents; the award-winning organization, which has 500 employees, is a leader in the retirement industry; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Home on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Home as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for its many years of providing caring and compassionate service.
